The economic crisis and antisemite tendencies

The arrangement of the Jewish graveyard wasn’t limited to financial aid during the Weimar republic by the mayors of Heumar and Wahn. Notes from a local meeting show that the religious classes of the Israelite children were favored as well. The gradual decline of the Jewish population was noticeable well before Hitler gained power. During the 1930’s a lot of Jews left Porz and moved to other areas. The essential reason was that the economic living conditions of the Jews had become increasingly worse in the administrative district. There are only few information about this progress of emigration.
Sources show that some Jews now live in New York or South America. However, there are also Jews who have returned to their native countries. Else Kahn-Tobias visited Porz very often from her native country England since then. Anyhow, there were people who have given way to the pressure of the Nazi regime and left Porz forever. The brothers Dülken sold their wood company they established in Porz in1900 to ensure their existence in the Netherlands. The company L. Krages & Co. o. H. took over „wood trade and company of industrial arrangements“ on June 21st 1937. The big Jewish business of Meirowsky also got sold on 9/3/1937 to the Dielektra AG. The fact that the local section leader arranged the renaming of Jewish streets shows that there was increasing class hatred. Thus Meirowskystraße was renamed as "Georg-Ohm-Straße".
